Polk County's Governmental Seat
Located in the Foothills of the scenic Appalachian Mountains, Columbus — named after Dr. Columbus Mills — became Polk County’s governmental seat in 1855. Columbus courthouse is listed in the National Registry of Historical Places and remains in use today.
Columbus provides residents with the best of both worlds, quiet serene surroundings and easy access to nearby cities by way of I-26, Highways 108, 176 and 74. Both I-85 and I-40 are 30 or so minutes away. People are drawn to this beautiful Gateway to the Mountains because of its temperate climate, recreational, cultural and equestrian traditions. Columbus is also home to St. Luke’s Hospital, celebrating 75+ years of service to the area.
